BCU Training and Assessment Minimize

BCUNA-Splash-Logo.jpg

Sea kayaking and sea kayak design as we enjoy it today owes a lot to the British, who regularly paddle in some of the most rowdy, cold water on the planet. The British Canoe Union is an internationally recognized governing body for paddlesports, whose courses are becoming increasingly popular in the U.S. Unlike the ACA, which certifies instructors only, the BCU certifies paddlers at specific skill levels. This "Star" system is recognized internationally and provides a valuable benchmark for tracking your advancement in the sport. First, take a training session, then go off and practice. When you're ready, come back and take the assessment.

2-Star Training
A terrific introduction to kayaking for beginners, this class is basic strokes and rescues on flat water. Very similar to ACA Basic Strokes and Rescues , this class spends a little less time on theory and a little more time on the water. [relates to ACA level 3 Basic strokes and rescues class]
Cost: $125
Duration: full day
Experience Required: None

2-Star Assessment
Passing the assessment proves you have skills in the basics. Even if you don't pass, the individualized feedback you get will be valuable and worth the experience.
Cost: $75
Duration: varies
Experience Required: None, but BCU 2-Star Training or ACA Basic Strokes and Maneuvers is recommended

3-Star Training
Refining basic strokes and skills along with learning new technique is the thrust of 3 Star. Learn the how and why of edge control, new turning strokes, recovery strokes and rescues. Taught on flat water, this class is the foundation for the kayaking you'll do in rougher open water. Even if you never leave protected water, this course helps provide skills to make your kayaking, more efficient and more fun. [relates to ACA level 4 "advanced stroke and maneuver refinement class]
Cost: $135
Duration: full day
Experience Required: None. BCU 2-Star Training, ACA Basic Strokes and Maneuvers or equivalent experience recommended.

3-Star Assessment
Pass this assessment and consider yourself an Intermediate paddler. You're ready to take your flatwater skills and move to the next level. This is also a prerequisite for becoming a BCU Coach.
Cost: $75
Duration: varies
Experience Required: 3-Star Training or equivalent experience
