Sea kayaking and sea kayak design as we enjoy it today owes a lot to the British, who regularly paddle in some of the most rowdy, cold water on the planet. The British Canoe Union is an internationally recognized governing body for paddlesports, whose courses are becoming increasingly popular in the U.S. Unlike the ACA, which certifies instructors only, the BCU certifies paddlers at specific skill levels. This "Star" system is recognized internationally and provides a valuable benchmark for tracking your advancement in the sport. First, take a training session, then go off and practice. When you're ready, come back and take the assessment.
